Position: Criminal Investigator I

Overview

The investigator conducts criminal and narcotic investigations, collects intelligence, interviews and surveils, works with confidential informants and criminal justice agencies, operates specialized equipment, gathers and maintains evidence, and may work undercover. The role includes serving on a statewide task force, providing law enforcement training, and investigating criminal matters related to guardianship and conservatorship across the state. The investigator maintains the full criminal investigative authority typical of Bureau of Criminal Investigation agents and supports the newly established Office of Guardianship and Conservatorship.

Primary duties focus on guardianship and conservatorship investigations statewide, ensuring accountability, protecting vulnerable populations, and upholding the Office’s integrity in accordance with Chapter 27-27.1 of the North Dakota Century Code.

Duties and Tasks
  • Serve as the Bureau's designated investigator for the Office of Guardianship and Conservatorship, with primary responsibility for criminal investigations involving guardianship and conservatorship statewide, in accordance with Chapter 27-27.1 of the North Dakota Century Code.
  • Participate in supervised basic investigations such as burglary, forgery, possession of controlled substances, larceny/theft, assault, gaming, motor vehicle thefts, stolen property, and other assigned investigations.
  • Maintain proficiency in the use of specialized technical equipment.
  • Complete duties associated with search warrants, preservation of evidence, and case preparation, including sworn testimony.
  • Conduct illegal drug investigations and work in an undercover role.
  • Apprehend and convict suspects who are responsible for the crime.
  • Obtain and exchange intelligence information and conduct surveillance activities.
  • Prepare and present case reports and develop and maintain associations with confidential informants.
  • Coordinate arrest and search warrant activities and operate electronic surveillance equipment.
  • Gather and maintain evidence and provide law enforcement training.
  • Extensive travel, including overnight stays, is required; a vehicle will be provided.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree and five years of investigative experience preferred; an acceptable combination of education, training, and experience will be considered.
  • Licensed or eligible to be licensed as a North Dakota peace officer.
  • Excellent report writing, communication, prioritization, time management, and organization skills.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, supervisors, all criminal justice agencies, and the public.
  • Maintain a high degree of confidentiality.
  • Good physical condition and ability to work in an undercover capacity.
  • Ability to be certified as a North Dakota law enforcement instructor.
  • Possess a valid state-issued driver s license and be willing to carry a firearm with proficiency.
  • Candidates offered a conditional job offer must complete polygraph, medical evaluation, physical fitness, drug screening, psychological assessment, background investigation, and final hiring panel review.
Compensation and Benefits

In addition to monthly salary, the position includes fully paid health insurance for employee and family, optional employee-paid dental and vision for employee and family, participation in the state NDPERS defined contribution retirement plan, option to participate in the 457 deferred compensation plan, option to contribute to a medical spending account, and accrual of annual and sick leave. Employees are eligible for the Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) program.
