Your new role
As a Visiting Officer with Birmingham City Council, you will work directly with individuals and families at risk of homelessness, carrying out property visits and mediating with hosts to support individuals to remain safely housed wherever possible. Your work will help reduce reliance on temporary accommodation and support more sustainable housing outcomes. You will also investigate overcrowding concerns, assess housing connection claims, and maintain accurate case records.
This role requires strong communication, resilience, and the ability to work independently while making a genuine difference to the lives of local residents.
Conduct home visits to households at risk of homelessness.
Mediate with hosts, friends, and family members to prevent homelessness wherever possible.
Reduce Bed & Breakfast placements through proactive engagement.
Investigate overcrowding complaints, assessing room sizes and occupancy levels.
Verify housing connection claims, including visits to neighbouring councils.
Maintain accurate case notes and records using the Northgate system (training provided).
Prepare clear reports in line with council standards.
Independently manage a varied, fast‑paced caseload.
Work collaboratively with other council teams and external partners.
Provide practical advice and support to prevent homelessness.
Hours:
35 hours per week (ongoing temporary contract)
Rate: £16.84 (inclusive of holiday)
What you'll need to succeed
Full UK driving licence and access to a vehicle (essential).
Strong interpersonal, communication, and mediation skills.
Ability to manage your own workload and work independently.
Experience in housing or a similar field (desirable).
Knowledge of the Northgate system (advantageous but not required).
Enhanced DBS clearance.
