Assessment and Reviewing Officer (Birmingham Carers Hub)
Midland Mencap is looking to fill two roles: a 1‑year fixed‑term maternity cover and a permanent position. The role reports to the Coordinator for Family Wellbeing Service.
Salary: £12.60 p/h
Hours: 16 hours per week (10am‑2pm, Mon/Tue/Thu & Fri)
Location: Head Office (B32 3BZ
) with outreach across Birmingham
We want someone passionate about working with individuals, families and communities, who can balance independent responsibility with strong teamwork and thrive in a dynamic environment.
Key traits include: motivation to make a difference; experience supporting people in community settings, especially diverse and underrepresented groups; understanding of unpaid carers’ challenges; confident communication with carers, colleagues, and professionals; organisational and adaptive skills; proactive safeguarding and confidentiality approach.
Key Responsibilities- Conduct Statutory Carers Assessments and Wellbeing Assessments using a strengths‑based, person‑centred approach.
- Provide timely and accurate information, advice, and guidance to unpaid carers to support their wellbeing.
- Engage effectively with culturally diverse communities, identified assets and strengths.
- Operate within a rota system to ensure consistent frontline service delivery.
- Collaborate with volunteers to extend service reach.
- Promote person‑centred, user‑led approaches including citizen consultation and co‑production.
- Participate in marketing and promotion of the Birmingham Carers Hub and wider services.
- Maintain up‑to‑date wellbeing plans and undertake high‑quality risk assessments tailored to carers’ needs.
- Review activities and casework regularly for continuous improvement.
- Recognise barriers faced by underrepresented communities, especially those supporting children or adults with disabilities and/or illnesses.
- Build strong working relationships with professionals such as social workers, healthcare providers, and educators.
- Work independently and collaboratively, demonstrating initiative and excellent communication skills.
- Plan and manage workloads to meet referral, assessment, and KPI targets.
- Safeguard concerns in line with multi‑agency guidelines and Midland Mencap’s policies, GDPR and safeguarding protocols.
- Maintain accurate, confidential records and reports in a timely and professional manner.
- Experience or lived experience in social care, health, or education settings.
- Lived experience as a parent‑carer of a disabled child or other unpaid carer roles.
- Follow administrative procedures and use MS 365 Apps.
- Good written and spoken communication skills.
- Use of IT Case Management Systems.
- Understanding of working with people from diverse cultural and community backgrounds.
- Plan and prioritise workload effectively.
- Attend, contribute to, and facilitate meetings and group discussions.
- Work respectfully with people across local communities and public services.
- Maintain discretion, integrity, and confidentiality.
- Work independently and as part of a team.
- Comfortable working flexibly to meet changing needs.
- Knowledge of disability and carer issues.
- Commitment to safeguarding and welfare of vulnerable individuals.
- Understanding or willingness to learn co‑production, person‑centred and strengths‑based approaches.
- Recognise and uphold duty of care to all citizens and the public.

- Commit to safeguarding principles.
- Hold an enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) clearance.
- Be available to work occasionally in evenings and weekends.
- Travel across Birmingham essential; access to a car and a full UK driving licence essential.
