The team

An exciting opportunity to join one of the largest national law firms in the UK. You will be supporting the Private Client services team in the Birmingham office. You will provide administrative, legal and fee-earning support to the Birmingham Private Client services team in the area of lifetime estate planning and in estate administration, whilst providing an efficient service and high-standard of client care.

As solicitor apprentice, you will provide day-to-day support and assistance to the fee earners in Birmingham ’s Lifetime and Estate Planning team. You will receive training to support the team’s clients and caseloads. This will include:

  • Assisting with new client enquiries.
  • Assisting with arrangements for meetings, and telephone calls, and where required, attend to take detailed notes.
  • Communicating with clients, other firms of solicitors and third parties by telephone or in writing including taking basic client instructions and providing case updates when appropriate.
  • Drafting documents (including letters, wills, powers of attorney, tax reporting forms for estates, probate applications, statements of truth, and trust documents.
  • Tracking progress of cases across the team.
  • Reporting to team leader on case progress and interactions and referrals to other departments.
  • Achieve time recording and fee income targets to ensure profitable working.
  • Ensuring compliance with the firm’s policies and procedures.
  • Attending appropriate training events as and when required.
  • Conducting Legal Research and obtaining documentation, such as copies of Grants of Probate, Wills and Land Registry documentation) as requested by members of the team.
  • Supporting the team's business development activities/events; and
  • Working to deadlines and be adept at multi-tasking.
  • Whilst planning and prioritising will be the key to your success; you’ll also need to be flexible and quick to respond to requests at short notice. You’ll be experienced in following set guidelines and processes, but with the ability and confidence to use your own judgement where required and to complete written tasks to a high standard (e.g. grammatical and technical accuracy).
  • Completing relevant administration duties including photocopying, scanning documents, amending documentation, filing, archiving and file maintenance.

The Irwin Mitchell Solicitor Apprenticeship is a six year programme. You will gain an LLB (Hons) in Legal Practice from BPP and at the end of the programme you will qualify as a solicitor after achieving the Solicitors Qualifying Exam 1 and 2 qualifications along with 2 years’ qualifying work experience.

All of your tuition fees will be paid and best of all, you will earn a salary whilst you are training and gaining your qualification.

The apprenticeship will combine practical work-based learning with formal study. You’ll gain valuable, real-life experience in the UK’s largest full service law firm, enhancing your legal and commercial understanding and growing your confidence in a work environment. As you progress through your apprenticeship, you will build a portfolio of the experience you have gained and the tasks you have completed in the workplace.
