Allen Lane is supporting a public sector organisation on their recruitment for a Senior Legal Counsel to join their legal team on a permanent basis.

Location:

Birmingham (3 days onsite per week).

Final date to receive applications: 21st January 2026 (early applications accepted).

• Provide high quality legal support including drafting and advising on commercial contracts, procurement, construction, funding agreements, corporate law, intellectual property, finance and technology issues.
• Deliver statutory advice as required.
• Advise on resolution of contractual claims and disputes, supporting but not directly conducting litigation or arbitration with external counsel.
• Manage external legal support, monitor costs, set budgets and timescales, and ensure quality.
• Prepare and draft reports and briefings for senior management, liaising with senior lawyers and policy advisers across government departments.
• Promote and embed Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) in all work and comply with related policies.

• Produce and present complex documents and reports to diverse audiences.
• Prepare complex legal drafting without supervision.
• Influence stakeholders at all levels and build effective relationships.
• Problem‑solving skills and ability to work without established precedent.
• Balance and prioritise multiple tasks while maintaining detail and meeting deadlines.
• Advanced planning and organisational skills.
• Flexible, multidisciplinary teamwork experience on commercial legal issues.

• Qualified solicitor or barrister with contracting or construction experience in a client and/or contractor environment.
• Minimum 5 years PQE.
• Specialised in contract law and/or procurement law, preferably major projects.
