We are excited to offer an Assistant Psychologist post in the Learning Disabilities Team service within Forward Thinking Birmingham (FTB). This post is open to candidates with a psychology degree that meets Graduate Basis for Chartered Membership (GBC)/Graduate Basis for Registration with the British Psychological Society (BPS). The post holder will join a well-established and supportive service for young people aged between 0-19 years who have a moderate to severe learning disabilities who show significant behaviours that challenge and/or are experiencing mental health difficulties.

The Learning Disabilities Team (LDT) is a multi-disciplinary team comprising of Clinical Psychologists, Learning Disability Nurses, Support Workers, Psychiatrists, an Occupational Therapist, a Speech and Language Therapist, a Paediatrician and another Assistant Psychologist (aside from this post). We regularly facilitate placements for medics and psychology students of varying levels.

As a service, we work across two main clinical pathways: behaviours that challenge and mental health.

We also offer neurodevelopmental assessment and diagnosis for those children known to our service who demonstrate behaviours indicative of either Autism and/or ADHD and where this assessment is required to better understand the behaviours of concern they show and/or their mental health difficulties.

Main duties of the job: The Assistant Psychologist role is an extremely valued position within the team.

You will be based at the Finch Road Hub in Lozells, with travel citywide frequently required.

  • Supporting qualified Clinical Psychologists with a range of clinical activities, including assessment, formulation and implementation/evaluation of structured interventions, under close supervision.
  • The role will also include liaising with the network around a young person, such as schools, families, social workers and other teams within FTB, to collate further information to be considered as part of a young person’s assessment.
  • Supporting the completion of choice assessments at Finch Road Primary Care Centre with qualified staff across disciplines.
  • Supporting the development, planning and running of parent psychoeducation groups
  • Attendance at multidisciplinary team and other clinical meetings, to offer a psychological perspective where appropriate, to support record keeping and completion of outstanding clinical actions.
  • You will have the opportunity to develop your clinical experience and be involved in training, consultation and leadership opportunities, if you wish.
