Overview
As an Information Rights Officer you will be welcomed into a dynamic and inclusive Data Protection team. The IOPC is developing its culture and ethos to support core outcomes and this role offers an opportunity to contribute to improving the police complaints system in England and Wales.
Responsibilities- Act as the first point of contact for processing all subject access requests, ensuring responses are accurate, compliant and timely.
- Provide high‑quality advice and support on the application of information rights law through scoping and drafting of subject access request and FOI response documents.
- Advise on whether information should be disclosed or refused in compliance with relevant legislation, deferring to legal counsel when necessary.
- Interpret and apply relevant tribunal and Information Commissioners Office (ICO) cases and guidance to request responses.
- Assess requests and correspondence to identify internal and external stakeholders that may be affected by disclosure.
Essential Experience
- Professional qualification, equivalent qualification or demonstrable working experience in a similar role.
- Proven ability to draft redact documents and prepare disclosure schedules in accordance with Article 15 UK GDPR.
- Ability to make evidence‑based decisions taking into account legislation such as UK GDPR, DPA, FOIA and PRA.
- Good analytical skills to assess information disclosures.
- Excellent attention to detail.
- Influence colleagues at all levels across the organisation.
- Working knowledge of records management, complaints processes, archive and retention principles and supporting systems.
- Proven ability to provide advice to both internal and external stakeholders on complex legal issues.
- Excellent organisational skills and ability to work under pressure to tight deadlines.
- Work effectively both independently and as part of a team and show initiative in a changing environment.
- Theoretical and practical understanding of the Freedom of Information Act and Data Protection law.
- Working knowledge of IT applications and systems; knowledge of redaction tools is an advantage.
- Knowledge of other pertinent legislation such as the Human Rights Act, Police Reform Act, Regulation of Investigatory Powers Act and Police Reform and Social Responsibility Act.
- Extra time for presentations or interview questions.
- Formatting changes such as colours for text or background on written assignments.
- Questions presented in writing during interviews.
- Signatory of the Business in the Community Race at Work Charter.

Contact with individuals experiencing extreme distress is possible.
