Job Context

The Lapworth Museum of Geology is a principal geological museum with a large collection and active public engagement programme, welcoming around 65,000 visitors per year. The museum is fully Accredited and designated by Arts Council England.

Job Summary

As a member of the Lapworth Museum of Geology Visitor Services Team, you will welcome visitors, provide information about the museum and campus attractions, and collect visitor data and feedback. You will promote and sell retail merchandise and ensure reception and spaces are clean and well maintained. You will liaise with other museum staff as needed.

Main duties
  • Customer Care
    • Implement agreed levels of customer care and provide excellent service
    • Greet customers arriving for group tours (including weekdays and weekends)
    • Check and tidy visitor areas and facilities to a high standard of cleanliness; respond to incidents as required
  • Monitoring/Reception of Visitors
    • Provide admission facilities to visitors
    • Promote visitor data collection and record visitor numbers using an electronic counting system
    • Monitor visitor flow to minimise queues and prevent overcrowding
    • Operate electronic card transaction machines; carry out daily card transaction reports
  • Visitor Welcome/Information Provision
    • Maintain an attractive information point with printed publicity
    • Promote and sell gifts and refreshments
    • Enforce safety constraints sympathetically to protect property and exhibits
    • Acquire knowledge of the museum and exhibits to provide accurate information
    • Direct enquiries to other museum staff as necessary
    • Promote museum events and take bookings
  • Administration
    • Complete records and documentation accurately and dispatch forms promptly
    • Enter visitor data on web-based platforms
    • Co-operate with College staff, particularly the Lapworth Museum Team
    • Observe Health & Safety regulations in accordance with University obligations
  • Retail
    • Assist daily retail operations and maximise income within guidelines
    • Upsell and provide high levels of service to exceed expectations
    • Present shop space effectively using merchandising guidelines and EPOS data
    • Conduct stock checks and maintain stock control and ticketing
    • Ensure security of premises, stock and equipment
  • Personal Development
    • Attend training, team meetings, and undertake one-to-one training as required
Essential

Required knowledge, skills, qualifications & experience

  • Good standard of education – numerate/literate
  • Computer skills in MS Word, Excel, Outlook and Power Point
  • Museum, retail or venue environment knowledge
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills
  • Strong customer service experience in a retail or similar environment
  • Flexible and proactive approach to working
Desirable
  • Basic EPOS knowledge or card transaction experience (training provided)
  • Selling and merchandising skills
Additional details
  • You will be working within a team of students on a weekly rota
  • Successful candidates will work full or part days depending on availability and hourly restrictions
  • Typical opening times are 10am - 5pm weekdays and 12pm - 5pm weekends

Eligibility and work limits
:
The University of Birmingham restricts students to up to 20 hours per week during term time for a maximum of 13 consecutive weeks. If the role exceeds 20 hours per week, vacation periods must be agreed with your supervisor. International students must apply for Authorised Absence as required.
