About Us
Warwickshire County Council is seeking enthusiastic and ambitious individuals to join our Section 38 and Minor Works Team within Planning and Environment. The team supports the delivery of Warwickshire’s transport infrastructure by providing pre‑application guidance, technical approvals, inspections, and the adoption of new and legacy roads across the county.
We work on a wide range of developments that vary in size, location and complexity. Our work helps ensure that new infrastructure is safe, sustainable, and suitable for adoption, contributing directly to Warwickshire’s long‑term economic growth and quality of life.
About the RoleAs a Trainee Assistant Engineer, you will work under the guidance of senior officers to develop the technical skills needed to support the delivery of Section 38, Section 278 (Minor Works) and Section 184 Agreements. This is a hands‑on developmental role where you will gain experience in reviewing engineering drawings, supporting technical approvals, undertaking site inspections, and helping to progress both new and legacy developments towards adoption.
You will also assist with the preparation of reports, communication with developers and consultants, monitoring financial aspects of agreements, and contributing to wider highways and planning processes.
This is an excellent opportunity for someone at the start of their engineering or transport career who wants to build strong technical foundations and grow within a supportive team.
Key RequirementsTo be successful in this role, you will need to demonstrate:
- Motivation, creativity and strong organisational skills
- A willingness to take responsibility for your work and contribute to the team’s success
- Strong analytical skills, with the ability to interpret technical information and understand the impact of development on the highway network
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal
- The ability to use your own initiative and respond to problems independently
- Confidence in working under pressure, managing deadlines and handling interruptions
- Good ICT skills, ideally including experience with engineering or transport planning systems such as CAD
- Education to NVQ Level 3 (or equivalent)
Additionally, you must be able to travel effectively throughout Warwickshire as required.
