About

the opportunity

Geoscience skills support a diverse range of projects, including resilient transport networks, adaptation to coastal erosion and flood risk, developing low carbon power generation and transmission systems, solving problems in nuclear waste management, and developing carbon capture and storage sites. You will work in our Tunnelling and Ground Engineering team, which includes expertise in engineering geology, geomorphology and geohazards, geophysics, hydrogeology, geotechnical engineering and tunnelling.

Our work combines geoscience with civil engineering. All civil engineering projects require geoscience, which means that you will have the unique opportunity to play a vital role on a variety of different projects to ensure that natural hazards and ground conditions are better understood and considered from project inception to construction.

Join us and you’ll have the chance to work on world‑class projects in the UK and around the World. You will be supported in learning new skills using specialist software, developing core skills, and assisting in delivering – and adding value to – our projects. You will gain experience working on multi-disciplinary projects by: supporting desk studies; using field and remote‑sensing techniques to characterise site hazards;

assisting with ground investigations and field work; describing soils and rocks in accordance with British Standards; assisting in the preparation of ground model reports; supporting the use of relevant software for mapping, analysis and data management (including GIS, coding and slope stability modelling); undertaking geotechnical designs and calculations; producing technical drawings and supporting construction and ground investigation site work.

You will be assigned a dedicated mentor to guide you and oversee your development. You will be supported to achieve a bachelor’s degree in Geoscience (BSc), student membership of the Geological Society and to work towards Chartership as part of this degree apprenticeship.
