Would you like to take technical ownership of a nationally significant rail asset that sits firmly on the critical path for the UK’s future railway?
Salary: £73,946.40 to £92,433 DOE (£61,622 - £77,028 + 20% Flexible Cash Fund)
Location:
Birmingham, 3 days in office per week, remainder from home.
Deadline: 26th January
An opportunity has arisen for a Lead Project Engineer to support the delivery of a major, greenfield rolling stock maintenance depot in Birmingham. This is a long-term role offering continuity across the full project lifecycle, from early design through construction, testing, commissioning and final handover.
Reporting to the Head of Engineering for Depots, you will act as the single point of technical accountability between the client organisation and the design and build joint venture. The role carries responsibility for systems integration, engineering assurance and delivery of a complex depot and integrated operational control environment.
You will play a key role in ensuring designs are deliverable, interfaces are managed effectively, and the finished asset is capable of being safely brought into operational service.
Essential experience:
Strong rail engineering background with experience on rolling stock maintenance depots or equivalent complex rail facilities
Proven experience delivering projects across both design and construction phases, including testing and commissioning
Solid understanding of systems engineering, control centres and operational requirements
Broad technical appreciation across multiple systems, including:
Experience working within a Design & Build and NEC contract framework
Control and command / operational control centre environments
Signalling and depot protection systems
SCADA and building management systems
OCS, HV power, M&E and communications
Ability to manage interfaces, integration risks and multidisciplinary teams
Confident operating in a client-facing role, holding suppliers to account
Desirable experience
Experience delivering passenger rolling stock depots
Background with train manufacturers or depot delivery specialists
Experience on major stations or similarly systems-heavy rail infrastructure
Previous line management or senior technical leadership experience
Why apply?
This role offers the opportunity to take long-term technical ownership of a nationally critical rail asset, working at the centre of a complex delivery programme with real influence over how the infrastructure is designed, built and brought into service.
If you are a systems-focused rail engineer looking for a role with longevity, scale and technical challenge, this is a standout opportunity.
