Science Teaching Assistant

Do you want classroom experience in Science before applying for teacher training? Could you deliver targeted support that helps pupils improve attainment across KS3 and KS4?

Science Teaching Assistant | September 2026 – July 2027 | £85 - £105 per day | ‘Good’ secondary school, Ward of Edgbaston | Help raise attainment in science through KS3 and KS4

The Role

Work with the Science department to close gaps in pupil understanding across Biology, Chemistry and Physics. You’ll provide 1:1 support, lead small-group interventions, reinforce key knowledge from lessons, and help pupils improve confidence with classwork, revision, and exam preparation. You’ll also help prepare concise resources, support pupils with practical write-ups and extended responses, and feed back clearly to teachers on progress and next steps.

Teaching assistants commonly support learning activities, work with small groups, and help pupils with reading, writing and classroom tasks.

The Candidate

You hold a degree, communicate clearly, and can explain scientific ideas in simple, manageable steps. You’re organised, reliable and keen to build school-based experience before moving into teacher training or another education-focused career.

Requirements
  • Degree – A 2:2 or above in any subject.
  • Communication – Clear and confident verbal and written communication.
  • Enhanced DBS – Must hold or be willing to obtain an Enhanced DBS certificate. Roles involving regulated activity with children can require an Enhanced DBS check, and may also include a Children’s Barred List check.
  • Desire to work in education/with children – Genuine interest in supporting pupil progress and wellbeing.
  • Experience working with children – Any relevant experience such as tutoring, mentoring, coaching or volunteering is desirable but not essential.
