Mayfield School is a special academy for 315 pupils aged 3–19 with a wide range of special educational needs and disabilities, including PMLD, cognition, learning needs and autism. We are a UNICEF Rights‑Respecting School on a journey to achieve the gold award.
Our school is split across two sites – Wheeler Street in Lozells and Heathfield Road in Handsworth. Successful applicants may work at either site depending on the needs of the school. We welcome applicants with mainstream or special school experience; experience working with students with complex SEND is an advantage.
Teachers are valued and their CPD is supported. Working with young people with SEND can be challenging; a full programme of training and support is offered. We expect teachers to adopt creative, innovative, and highly personalised approaches to engaging learners and enabling them to make progress.
About This RoleThe curriculum leader will take lead responsibility for providing leadership and management to secure:
- High‑quality teaching
- Effective use of curriculum budget and appropriate resources
- Improved standards of learning and achievement for all pupils
Reliable, consistent, positive and solution‑focused individuals who:
- Provide rich learning experiences for pupils
- Support and develop other staff
- Demonstrate personal resilience and a commitment to children’s universal rights
Qualified and experienced teachers who have taught children or young people of any age and who are willing to work with a strong team are encouraged to apply. Special school experience is advantageous but not essential. This post is unsuitable for ECTs or unqualified teachers.

The post is covered by Part 7 of the Immigration Act 2016 – ability to speak fluent English is essential. It is exempt from the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 and amendments to the Exceptions Order 1975, 2013 and 2020. Pre‑employment checks include an enhanced DBS, Childcare Disqualification (where applicable), qualifications, medical fitness, identity and right to work. Two suitable references are required. Online searches and prohibition checks for teachers will also be conducted.
