Mayfield School is looking for an inspirational, dynamic and innovative Leader for Teacher Development to join our growing team. The successful postholder will be an experienced teacher with a track record of excellence in the classroom.
Our school is a special school for 315 pupils aged between 2 and 19 with a wide range of special educational needs and disabilities including PMLD, cognition and learning needs and autism. We are proud to be a Unicef Rights Respecting School, on a journey to achieve the gold award.
Mayfield School has a significant cohort of initial teacher trainees and early career teachers and we are committed to providing the support and working conditions for them to flourish and develop as professionals. This post involves planning, co‑ordinating and providing regular and robust training and development opportunities for all ITTs and ECTs so that they can complete their training and induction successfully and become competent and confident teachers.
The successful postholder will be a qualified teacher with a minimum of three years post‑ECT experience. It is vital that applicants have been a school based ECT mentor and have delivered training to teachers in their current or previous roles. Other coaching and mentoring experience would also be beneficial.
The Leader for Teacher Development will oversee the integrity of Mayfield Schools ITT/ECT offer, working closely with associate partners to ensure high quality delivery. This role would suit someone holding the National Professional Qualification for Leading Teacher Development, or someone willing to undertake this qualification.
There will be a teaching commitment attached to this role. This will allow the postholder to role model excellent classroom practice to others. You may be working with pupils who have persistent differences with social interaction, social communication and understanding emotions. Our pupils need clear boundaries and consistent support with engagement, learning, emotional regulation, and sensory needs.
The school is split across two sites – Wheeler Street in Lozells (co‑located with Holte School and Lozells Junior and Infant School and Nursery) and Heathfield Road in Handsworth. We welcome applicants with EYFS, primary, secondary or post 16 experience in special or mainstream settings.
We are looking for positive, collaborative, supportive and solution‑focused people who will seek every opportunity to provide rich learning experiences for our staff and pupils and who can show personal resilience and a commitment to children’s universal rights. Mayfield is a “can‑do” school, committed to inclusion and participation.
A recent Welbee staff survey showed Mayfield as managing the risks of work‑related stress and staff wellbeing effectively. Our team tell us that they value the support of their colleagues and the in‑house training offered by the school and welcome the professional development opportunities available to them.
We are proud to be part of Education Impact Academy Trust where "better never ends".
In addition to the salary, we offer a benefits package for all employees through BHSF and regular opportunities for professional development and growth through the school and as part of the Trust. Teachers and leaders at Mayfield can take PPA from home for half a day per week.
We can offer:
- A collaborative and inclusive culture
- A committed, hardworking team who strive to provide the best education for all student
- Comprehensive induction and probation support and regular opportunities for professional development and growth.
- We offer 10 staff training days across the academic year; one or two of these days may be aggregated which means you complete training outside of normal working hours in twilight session

- Access to discounts and offers via BHSF
- Access to a generous pension scheme known as the Local Government Pension Scheme…
