SEN Academic Mentor

Do you want a role where you build serious SEND experience by supporting one student across the full secondary timetable, not just “helping out” in lessons?

  • September 2026 to July 2027 (academic year)
  • £85 - £105 per day
  • ‘Good’ secondary school, Ward of Selly Oak
  • 1:1 SEN support across all subjects for a student with Autism and ADHD.

If you are considering a PGCE, educational psychology, or a longer‑term SEND pathway, this SEN Academic Mentor role gives you consistent, day‑to‑day experience that actually matters. You will work 1:1 with a student with Autism and ADHD, helping them manage routines, stay regulated, and access learning across all subjects with calm, structured support.

The Role
  • You will provide consistent 1:1 support across the student’s lessons, keeping tasks clear and manageable.
  • You will break work into small steps and use visuals, checklists, and prompts to support independence.
  • You will support focus and organisation, including equipment, transitions, and starting work quickly.
  • You will help the student regulate emotions and behaviour using agreed strategies and de‑escalation.
  • You will reduce anxiety by creating predictable routines and giving clear, simple instructions.
  • You will adapt tasks so the student can access learning without lowering expectations.
  • You will record key notes on progress, triggers, and strategies, and share updates with teachers and the SENCO.
  • You will follow safeguarding and behaviour policies at all times and report concerns immediately.
The Candidate
  • You will have a 2:2 degree or above (Psychology, Education, Childhood Studies, Criminology, Sociology or similar is ideal).
  • You will have GCSE English and Maths at grade 4/C or above.
  • You will be calm, consistent and confident supporting behaviour that can be challenging.
  • You will communicate clearly and keep firm professional boundaries.
  • You will take direction well and stick to agreed strategies, because consistency is the point.
  • You will have an enhanced DBS on the Update Service, or you will be willing to obtain one.
The School

This ‘Good’ secondary school in the Ward of Selly Oak has clear routines and a strong focus on inclusion. Staff work closely with the SENCO and pastoral team to support students who need structured, consistent input. You will be supported with clear guidance, regular feedback, and a role that lets you build practical SEND experience across a full academic year.
