Child Development/Support
St John's is a Church of England primary school where every child is welcomed, valued and loved. The school's purpose is to serve the community of Sparkhill by providing each child with the education they need to flourish and each family the support they need to thrive.
All different, all equal, all growing together
At St John’s we are proud to have a positive ethos of inclusion for all our children that have additional SEMH or special educational needs. Each child is unique, and has unique needs.
Our Nurture team currently has an AHT for Pastoral, a children and families support coordinator and a nurture assistant. We are looking for an additional nurture assistant to increase our team so that we can offer a wider range of support and intervention.
Our school has a Nurture Den which children from all year groups access for targeted interventions. This may involve working with individuals or with small groups. These interventions include things like: anger management and anxiety toolkits, Lego therapy, sensory circuits, circle of friends and social communication activities. The nurture assistant also supports children to work successfully with their class so part of the role may be carried out in the classroom.
In order for children to access all areas of school life, the nurture assistant sometimes supports at playtimes and lunchtime either outside or through running a club.
While most of our interventions are planned for, there are occasions when children need nurture support ‘in the moment’. The nurture assistant will need to respond to this and support children who may become dysregulated.
We are looking to appoint a nurture assistant to start with us in the Summer Term 2026.
This will be an exciting time to join us at St John’s as we develop our inclusion profile, by offering an individualised, high quality nurture approach for all pupils.

Resilient, positive, forward looking and enthusiastic about making a difference. Able to work with staff, parents and agencies to promote best practice for learners who have barriers to learning.
