Assistant or Associate Professor (Research and Education) in Forests under Global Change – School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences

Join the University of Birmingham to advance research on how forests respond to climate change, disturbance and environmental stress. The successful candidate will contribute to a growing research community and teach across undergraduate and postgraduate levels.

Position Details

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences – University of Birmingham, Edgbaston, Birmingham, UK
Grade 8 or 9 – Full Time, Permanent.
Starting salary:
Grade 8 £ 47,389‑£56,535 (potential progression to £63,606), Grade 9 £ 58,225‑£67,468 (potential progression to £87,974).
Closing date: 1st February 2026.

Academic Development Programme

New Assistant Professors will undertake a 5‑year development programme, culminating in promotion to Associate Professor.

Key Responsibilities
  • Conduct research on forest ecology, physiology, biogeochemistry, ecosystem modelling and resilient forest management under global change.
  • Publish high‑impact scientific papers, books and other material; secure external research funding.
  • Teach undergraduate and postgraduate courses, develop curriculum, and supervise students.
  • Participate in examinations, course development, and school service activities.
  • Collaborate with BIFoR, ECOLAB, BISCA, IDAI and international partners.
Qualifications
  • PhD in a relevant forest or environmental science area and post‑doctoral research experience.
  • Strong track record of high‑quality publications and external funding acquisition.
  • Demonstrated commitment to inclusive teaching and postgraduate supervision.
  • Ability to contribute to a research portfolio that encourages interdisciplinary collaboration.
