Job OverviewWe are delighted to advertise an exciting opportunity in the newly formed department of general internal medicine at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Birmingham. We are looking for highly motivated individuals to work in a combined role with any group 1 specialty, building a collaborative team of Consultants who will deliver a high-quality internal medicine service, alongside specialty interests in a flexible working pattern.
Each post is 1.0 WTE, with 0.5 WTE GIM and 0.5 WTE specialty. For their GIM responsibilities, the post holders will be responsible for inpatient care on ward 513 as the newly formed internal medicine ward, with a one week in 6 pattern, including weekends. The remaining 5 weeks are flexible in working pattern and focus on Palliative Care sessions with GIM activity including a weekly MDT, educational activities, monthly governance and SPA time.
There is no evening or overnight on call attached to these posts, and we welcome applications from those who would like to work flexibly on non-ward weeks, please see detailed job plan below.
The 0.5 WTE palliative medicine consultant component of this post will be based at Birmingham Heartlands Hospital working with the Supportive and Palliative care team led by Dr Milind Arolker on this site. This team works across this hospital site receiving referrals across the whole clinical spectrum in adult medicine.
Main duties of the jobThe post holder will be required to assist in supporting team members on other sites across UHB, on occasion, but this will not be routine or onerous. Allowance will also be made for the weekend on call work in GIM when considering the post holders level of commitment to the palliative medicine on call rota

- Dynamic and enthusiastic individual interested in building a department of internal medicine
- Leadership skills appropriate to meet the strategic and operational priorities of the department
- Ability to respond to and where required, lead change within the department and wider organisation
- Ability to work in teams both clinical and non-clinical to ensure high quality care is provided, and a robust framework of learning, teaching and clinical governance is maintained
- Excellent interpersonal skills with patients, ability to navigate difficult communication scenarios
- Enthusiasm for developing internal medicine services including daycase, outpatient, virtual ward and community links

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
As a consultant the post holder will have full responsibilities for patients under their care within the context of a multidisciplinary team structure and share clinical responsibility with colleagues in running the clinical work of the department. There are opportunities to add additional responsibilities around education lead, governance lead and rota coordination in discussion with the leadership team.
Person Specification Qualifications- MRCP or equivalent
- Entered on GMC register
- Dual CCT/Portfolio Pathway in GIM and Palliative Care, or equivalent within 6 months at the time of interview
- Evidence of continuing professional development
