Overview
We are seeking to recruit enthusiastic, innovative and progressive Consultant Dermatologists to join our Dermatology Team in our large teaching Trust. The post holders will join a department of 3 Consultant Dermatologists, 2 Consultant Surgical colleagues, and a dedicated nursing and administration team based at the Birmingham Skin Centre, City Health Campus. The department offers an outpatient area, skin theatre and minor procedures area, phototherapy suite, Cutaneous Allergy Unit and a regional Laser unit.
Specialist services include dermatological surgery, tertiary cutaneous allergy, laser therapy, paediatric dermatology, skin cancer, and a biologics service. The post holders are expected to have a broad-based dermatology background and may have a subspecialty interest to complement the department. The jobs are flexible and structured to provide surgical sessions (potentially including Laser surgery for those with expertise) alongside general dermatology, paediatric dermatology, skin cancer and other clinics according to sub-specialty interests.
There is an expectation to contribute to teaching, training and research.
- Take equal responsibility with existing Consultants for the proper functioning of the clinical service, working with clinical and managerial colleagues to achieve and maintain national targets.
- Participate in on-call commitments in-hours and out-of-hours; out-of-hours on-call currently 1:20 cross-site coverage with a Category B on-call availability supplement of 1%.
- Be prepared to participate in the cross-site regional out-of-hours on-call rota for dermatology.
- Be included on the GMC Specialist Register in Dermatology, or be within 6 months of receiving CCT at the time of interview.
- Have a job plan and work schedule outlining arrangements for how work is organised, where it is located, what work comprises and when it is performed.
- Engage with undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and contribute to research initiatives in collaboration with the University of Birmingham and Health Education West Midlands.
- Participate in research activities or initiate dermatology research projects; the department supports research opportunities and protected research time where applicable.
- The University of Birmingham supports research by offering two protected research PAs to recently appointed consultants (within 18 months). Sessions are prioritised for those with research commitment aligned to University strengths; support is assessed competitively.
- A bespoke mentoring/training programme and a £5k training/consumables budget will be provided. Research PAs are planned for 3 years with potential to secure further funding beyond this period.
- Applicants must be on the GMC Specialist Register in Dermatology, or within 6 months of expected date of receipt of CCT, at the time of interview.
- The Trust is committed to undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and has strong links to the University of Birmingham and Health Education West Midlands. The Dermatology department hosts junior doctors in training and medical students and is involved in a variety of research activities.
- There is cross-site collaboration within the Black Country Provider Collaborative (four partner trusts) and flexibility to work across sites to meet patient and service needs.
- We are committed to equality of opportunity and actively encourage applications from candidates who are underrepresented in the workforce, including people from Black, Asian and minority ethnic backgrounds, disabled people, LGBTQI+ people, and women.
- We support a healthy work-life balance and welcome flexible working discussions with the Recruiting Manager during onboarding; we also encourage sustainable practices and involvement in the Green Impact programme.
