Consultant Anaesthetist
Closing date: 03 February 2026.
We are excited to invite applications for a Consultant Anaesthetist within University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust (UHB).
The current opportunity is for 3 consultants to join the dedicated team based at Birmingham Heartlands, Good Hope and Solihull hospitals.
We are looking to appoint consultants with an interest in a number of subspecialties including vascular anaesthesia, thoracic anaesthesia, bariatrics, colorectal, ENT, urology, gynaecology, paediatric day surgery, general surgery, obstetric anaesthesia, trauma and orthopaedics and pain medicine.
On‑call commitment can be on the General on‑call tier at Heartlands, or the Obstetric on‑call at Heartlands, or at Good Hope where the on‑call consultant covers both obstetrics and emergency theatres.
The appointee will be expected to participate in the Divisional and Departmental quality improvement projects as well as undergraduate and postgraduate teaching.
Main duties of the jobThe core component of this post is to provide anaesthetic cover for a variety of surgical services. If a consultant has a special interest in pain medicine, they will have a split job plan between pain and anaesthetics.
The post holder must understand the significant ongoing changes in the Trust's services and be prepared to take an active part in the change programme.
A standard full‑time job plan will contain 10 programmed activities which could be filled by a variety of options, from currently uncovered lists and flexible cover for consultant leave. A programmed activity will normally have a timetable value of 4 hours, and a full‑time consultant will normally devote 8 programmed activities to direct clinical care. The remaining programmed activities will be devoted to supporting professional activities.
An example 10 PA job plan is indicated, but the successful candidate will be invited to discuss these options with the Clinical Service Lead on appointment.
