This post is an additional post to join the existing post‑graduate medical team of 3 senior trainees (ST4‑8), 1 junior trainee (ST2‑3) and 2 Physician associates working in the speciality services of the Paediatric Hepatology Department at Birmingham Children’s Hospital.
The successful candidate will be expected to work closely with both medical and surgical teams.
The appointed candidate will cover the out‑of‑hours long days and weekend long‑day service rota which is shared jointly between hepatology and gastroenterology (i.e. covering hepatology and gastroenterology inpatients from 17:00 to 21:00 on weekdays and from 08:30 to 21:00 on weekends on a rotational basis).
Main duties of the job- Day‑to‑day management of children with all forms of liver disease, including peri‑operative care of children receiving liver transplantation and liver and small bowel transplantation.
- Presenting patients for MDT meetings including formal transplant assessment presentations.
- The admission of acute and elective patients.
- The timely summary letters of discharges from the ward.
- Providing specialist advice in the form of telephone consultations from the extensive catchment area; appropriate discussion with the on‑call consultant and follow‑up of referred patients.
- Theatre lists to gain experience in liver biopsy and therapeutic endoscopy.
- Outpatient clinics with preparation and feedback to the named consultant at the Thursday outpatient review.
- Review of immunosuppression flow sheets and feedback to the named consultant and specialist nursing team.
