About us

Birmingham Women's and Children's NHS Foundation Trust was formed in 2017 as the first specialist Women and Children's Trust in the country. It comprises of 2 hospitals: (Birmingham Children's Hospital and Birmingham Women's Hospital) as well as Forward Thinking Birmingham, a mental health partnership for Birmingham.

The Children's Hospital moved to a new site at Steel house Lane in the centre of the city in May 1998. This marked the culmination of a long history of planning for a new Hospital to replace the overcrowded facilities at its previous home in Ladywood. The relocation involved a £30 million redevelopment of the previous Birmingham General Hospital site and has created a large, multidisciplinary, dedicated Children's Hospital with a capacity for almost 300 beds.

In 2018 a new development called Waterfall house opened, which includes provision of theatres, a rare disease centre housing outpatient rooms and haematology and oncology inpatient facility.

The hospital includes a 31-bed intensive care unit and seventeen operating theatres. 4 theatres have integrated laparoscopic stacks to facilitate advanced minimally invasive surgery.

In addition to upgraded clinical facilities, the site includes a parent accommodation block (Ronald McDonald House), the James Brindley Hospital School and a new Education Centre.
