Consultant in Congenital Cardiac Surgery

This post is for a Consultant Cardiac Surgeon to join the existing team of three Consultant Surgeons running the Congenital Cardiac Surgery service based in the Department of Cardiac Surgery, Birmingham Women's and Children's Hospital NHS Foundation Trust (BWC) and University Hospitals Birmingham (UHB).

The appointee will work collaboratively within the service to provide inpatient and outpatient care for congenital cardiac patients at these Trusts with responsibility for patients under their care within the context of a multidisciplinary team structure. The post aims to appoint an early career consultant surgeon with full mentoring of their practice within the initial period of appointment.

Main duties of the job

The appointee will work collaboratively within the service to provide inpatient and outpatient care for congenital cardiac patients  appointee will have responsibility for patients under their care within the context of a multidisciplinary team structure.

There will also be a sessional commitment to the University Hospital Birmingham (Queen Elizabeth Hospital) for the provision of the Adult Congenital Cardiac Surgery service. The cardiothoracic unit provides adult cardiac surgery, advanced heart failure therapies and cardiopulmonary transplantation for the West Midlands and Wales. The unit is located in the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Edgbaston.

The post holder will participate in the consultant on-call rota in the department of Paediatric Cardiac Surgery for acute care and resuscitation of patients within the Trust, including cannulation for Extra-corporeal life support with availability on site within 20 minutes.

Job responsibilities

The successful applicant, as an appropriately trained specialist in Paediatric Cardiac Surgery will assume a full clinical role in the stabilisation, investigation and clinical management of patients presenting with a broad spectrum of congenital heart disease.

Person Specification Qualifications
  • Full GMC Registration
  • Inclusion on Specialist Register for Cardiothoracic Surgery or, if in training, eligible for inclusion on the Register within 6 months
  • FRCS(Cth) or equivalent
  • MD / PhD or MSc in a relevant subject submitted or awarded
Knowledge and nature of experience
  • Completed training in Cardiothoracic surgery through a recognised training program or equivalent route as recognised by the GMC
  • Competent in adult cardiothoracic surgery with a demonstrable record of clinical development, expertise and knowledge.
  • Minimum of 2 years subspecialty training in congenital cardiac surgery
  • Wide clinical experience in all aspects of cardiothoracic surgery
  • Experience in transplantation and extra-corporeal circulation
  • Evidence of an active research and educational interest
Analytical and judgment skills
  • Recent experience of managing patients with complex cardiovascular physiology at a consultant/ independent surgeon level
  • Practical experience of leading clinical audit/ QIP projects, with measurable outcomes
Professional/managerial/specialist knowledge
  • Evidence of Previous Management and Leadership Tasks
  • Participation in and leading a medical team
  • Commitment to and understanding of the principles of audit at local and national level
  • Publications in peer-reviewed cardiothoracic journals
  • Commitment to continuing personal development and medical education
