Overview
Flexible working arrangements may be considered and discussions with the recruiting manager regarding this are encouraged.
Co-ordination of the Paediatric Dentistry Services within the Children's Hospital, working in close liaison with NHS Consultants Sarah McKaig, Ajit Tanday and Alison James.
Responsibilities- Coordinate paediatric dental services with other secondary care providers.
- Provide dental treatment in an inpatient and outpatient setting.
- Support multidisciplinary care for those patients attending Birmingham Children’s Hospital.
- Support the education and training of postgraduate dentists and doctors in training to include clinical supervision.
- Provide a Paediatric Dentistry consultant service for patients referred from hospital colleagues, general medical and dental practitioners, and the community dental services across the region and Birmingham Dental Hospital.
- Develop and expand already established patient pathways across the region.
- Provide a treatment service for the more complex cases that are referred, working in close liaison with medical, surgical, and dental colleagues to provide an integrated service.
- Provide specialist care under inhalation sedation for children with behavioural problems and dental phobias.
- Provide support to multidisciplinary teams where paediatric dentistry is already established as an integral component of care.
- Provide dental care under general anaesthesia for children with medical, mental, and physical special needs at Birmingham Children’s Hospital.
- Continue to support those clinical services where there are existing relationships and arrangements.
- Collaborate with paediatric maxillofacial surgery.
- Participation in postgraduate training across West and East Midlands under the guidance of training programme director Laura Smart.
- Participation in undergraduate training in conjunction with The University of Birmingham School of Dentistry for those involved in the dental care of children.
- Be involved in formal and informal teaching programmes established in the department supporting all members of the clinical team.
- Work with Consultants in Dental Public Health in determining the needs and demands of the resident population with respect to dental care.
- Support and develop strategies to reduce oral health inequalities.
- Become a member of the Managed Clinical Network in Paediatric Dentistry for the West Midlands.
- Managerially and financially account to the Chief Medical Officer Birmingham Children’s Hospital NHS Trust for the delivery and quality of services.
- Coordinate and develop clinical services within the Trust’s Service and Financial Framework, and in line with the Trust’s clinical strategy and clinical governance framework.
- Contribute to national and regional NHS based committees, for example – education, research, audit, examinations, and conferences – subject to the availability of appropriate time within the job planning process and by mutual agreement.
- Be personally involved in research; work in national and international collaborative research programmes as opportunities arise.
- Lead and/or play an active part in national, regional sub‑regional and departmental audit.
- Liaise with other providers of paediatric dental care in audit projects and to foster a commitment to evidence‑based practice.
- Encourage development of special clinical interests which forward knowledge of the discipline or patient care within current financial constraints.
- Successfully completed an accredited specialist training programme in paediatric dentistry or equivalent.
- Be registered as a Specialist in Paediatric Dentistry with the General Dental Council.
- Require considerable flexibility and a wide range of management skills to meet the many challenges of developing and coordinating paediatric dental services.
