Children's Residential Support Worker

Full-time / Part-time / Permanent

Shift-based, including evenings, weekends and sleep-ins

Role Overview

We are seeking a dedicated, resilient and compassionate Children's Residential Support Worker (EBD) to support children and young people with emotional and behavioural difficulties within a residential care setting in Birmingham.

Many of the young people have experienced trauma, instability and disrupted attachments. You will play a key role in providing consistency, boundaries and emotional safety, helping young people regulate their behaviour, develop positive coping strategies and work towards improved outcomes.

Key Responsibilities
Therapeutic Care & Behaviour Support
  • Provide consistent, trauma-informed care in line with individual care and behaviour support plans
  • Build trusting, professional relationships with young people who may display challenging or high-risk behaviours
  • Support emotional regulation and positive behaviour through clear boundaries, routines and restorative approaches
  • Respond to incidents of challenging behaviour safely and appropriately, using de-escalation techniques
  • Implement agreed behaviour management strategies, including positive behaviour support and reward systems
Safeguarding & Risk Management
  • Safeguard and promote the welfare of children and young people at all times
  • Identify, manage and report safeguarding concerns in line with policy and legislation Daily Living & Development
    • Support young people with daily routines, personal care (where appropriate), education and appointments
    • Encourage independence, life skills and resilience
    • Promote engagement in structured activities, education and community involvement
    • Support young people to develop healthy relationships and social skills
    Teamwork & Professional Practice
    • Work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team, including managers, social workers, therapists and education providers
    • Participate in handovers, team meetings, supervisions and reflective practice
    • Maintain clear, accurate and timely written records
    • Adhere to organisational policies, procedures and values at all times
    Household Responsibilities
    • Help maintain a safe, structured and nurturing home environment
    • Support with cooking, cleaning and maintaining routines that provide stability and predictability
    Essential
    • A genuine commitment to working with children and young people with EBD
    • Emotional resilience and the ability to manage challenging behaviour calmly and professionally
    • Strong communication and relationship-building skills
    • Understanding of boundaries, consistency and therapeutic care
    • Willingness to work shifts including nights, weekends and sleep-ins
    • Ability to complete written records to a high standard
    • Right to work in the UK
    • Enhanced DBS check (or willingness to obtain)
    • Full UK driving licence
    Desirable
    • Experience working with children or young people with EBD, SEMH or trauma backgrounds
    • Level 3 Diploma in Residential Childcare (or willingness to work towards)
    • Training in Team Teach, MAPA or similar behaviour management approaches
    • Knowledge of safeguarding, child protection and Ofsted regulations
