SSW Laborer Part-Time

Position Purpose
The City of Birmingham (EOE) is seeking qualified candidates for the part-time position of Streets/Sewer/Water (SSW) Laborer in the Department of Public Services. Under the supervision of the Streets/Sewer/Water Foreman, this entry‑level position performs maintenance and operation of public infrastructure.

• Work includes outdoor physical labor.
• Operation of various types of equipment, including dump trucks, snow plows, and light construction equipment.
• Performs a variety of miscellaneous duties related to work projects;
  • Patching roads
  • Painting fire hydrants
  • Placing barricades
  • Maintaining vehicles
  • Plowing/salting
• Assists other crew personnel as required.
• Additional related responsibilities as assigned.

• Must have knowledge of safety procedures

• Must be self‑motivated
• Ability to work well with others

• Possession of a high school diploma, or its equivalent
• Minimum age of 18 years old with a valid driver’s license
• Prefer 2‑3 years of experience in the operation of light and medium‑duty construction equipment
• Prefer possession of a State of Michigan commercial driver’s license, group A or B, with tanker endorsement

• Must be able to lift at least 50 lbs.
• Must be able to stand for long periods of time
• Must be able to work outside in extreme conditions (heat, cold, snow, rain, etc.)
• Must be able to operate heavy machinery

• Office space including desk, computer, and phone
• City provided keys
• City provided tools

Salary: $20.25 - $25.32 per hour
