Location: Birmingham, MI
Travel: Travel to our other office in Troy, MI is required as needed. Mileage reimbursement is provided.

- High School Diploma or GED Equivalent
- Experience in Optometry and/or Ophthalmology is preferred, but not required

An Ophthalmic Technician/Scribe is a valuable asset to an Ophthalmologist, assisting in providing excellent patient care during visits. This employee will use ophthalmic techniques to perform preliminary work-up of patients in a clinic setting, scribe for Physicians, and may directly assist Physicians with examinations and treatment.
Essential Duties And Responsibilities- Provide exceptional customer service during every patient encounter (in person or via phone).
- Greet patients promptly, maintain a professional attitude, and thank them when they leave.
- Anticipate Physician needs to facilitate clinic flow.
- Practice urgency with patient time and Doctor’s schedule.
- Comply with all company policies and procedures, including HIPAA.
- Verify patient information by interviewing the patient.
- Record patient medical history and current medications and confirm purpose of visit.
- Record all data in the patient’s EMR.
- Check the condition of the patient’s eyes by observing pupils, muscles, visual acuity and extraocular movements.
- Required skills include dilation, refraction, pressures, and various diagnostic tests (visual fields, OCT, GDX, IOL master, auto refractor, topography).
- Demonstrates knowledge of eye anatomy, diseases, symptoms and ocular medications.
- Document medical visits and procedures accurately as performed by the Physician.
- Understand examination and procedure codes (ICD-9) when inputting into the EMR system.
- Ensure accurate procedure coding/charges and correct diagnosis codes for all patients and procedures.
- Prepare patients for treatments and minor procedures; measure and record vital signs as required.
- Open and close exam rooms as needed.
- Keep examination, treatment, laser and other rooms clean and stocked with supplies; maintain drug counts.
- General office duties and cleaning as assigned by manager.
- Desire to gain industry knowledge and training.

- Ability to interact professionally with all levels of staff.
- Commitment to work over 40 hours to meet business needs.
- Ability to work weekends when applicable.
- Reliable transportation to travel to multiple locations with short notice.
- High school diploma or GED required
- One year of related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience
- Experience in Optometry and/or Ophthalmology preferred but not required
- Current COA or COT certification is preferred but not required
- Ophthalmic Scribe Certification (OSC) preferred but not required
- Proficient use of EMR and image management systems
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook)
- Computer proficiency and ability to quickly learn new applications
- Frequent walking (75%), sitting (50%), standing (50%), with bending, stooping, and reaching (25–50%).
- Ability to lift, carry, push, and pull items up to 25 lbs.
- Fine motor skills and constant use of hands for grasping, writing/typing, and use of technology.
- Visual and auditory acuity (color, depth, peripheral vision, focus adjustment) required 100% of the time.
- Occasional driving or climbing may be necessary.
