Job Overview
Our Lead Van Drivers are B2B only, shuttling drivers to local car dealerships and auto auctions. No delivery of products or food. No special licensing needed. Ability to lift the vehicle hood and up to 15 lbs of fuel or a jump box. Retirees who enjoy being on the road, making local stops, consistency and commitment to timelines and routines, leading a team, camaraderie of other Lead Van Drivers, and who can use simple car‑finding and scanning apps on their smart phone are usually very successful in this role.

Job ScopeThe Roadrunner Services Lead Van Driver is the key touchpoint between our company and the 8–10 drivers riding in his/her van each day, and the primary communicator in the field to Dispatch. The Lead Van Driver arrives at the auto auction each day and is responsible for basic van inspections, maintenance logs, requesting repairs when needed, fueling the van with a company card, and securing the van, tags and other important company contents each afternoon.
The Lead Van Driver is also responsible for leading by example and enforcing safe driving methods, safe behavior on the lots and inside the van, and professional courtesy to both the passengers and our customers. Using the Detail Shop resources, the Lead Van Driver works with the location Manager or Dispatcher to schedule monthly cleaning of the vans. The Lead Van Driver models and encourages daily upkeep and cleanliness of the van among all passengers.
Overall accountability for leading a professional and efficient team of drivers and practicing safe driving methods to prevent accidents and damage to vehicles or injuries.
- Oversees the overall behavior and safety of the passengers in the van.
- Ensures all drivers use the apps available to find cars as well as our Roadmap App to scan vehicles.
- Coordinates the most efficient routes to and from car dealerships and auto auctions with Roadrunner Manager and Dispatch each day.
- Conducts visual inspection of the van, checks fluids, removes ice or snow, and takes the van to the Detail shop once per month or more if necessary due to inclement weather.
- Communicates expeditiously via talk‑to‑text or hands‑free phone calls with Roadrunner Location Manager on outcomes of each stop, obstacles preventing the completion of a full work order, estimated arrival times and any behavior or safety issues needing disciplinary action or termination of driver’s assignment.
- Encourages drivers to be polite, courteous and take due care with customers’ vehicles.
- Motivates and holds drivers accountable for working efficiently to be as productive as possible each day.
- Addresses any lag times due to unnecessary or excessive breaks or lack of effort by the drivers to be as productive as possible, as well as any reckless or unsafe driving.
- Ensures all drivers sign in and out for the day, turn in all tags for their van, leave the van clean and free of trash, fuel the van up for the next day, turn in the fuel cards in the secured area and park the vans in a secured area.
- Drives through the auction block on sale days.
Workday begins at 8 am most days and ends when the vehicle pickup and deliveries are completed, usually 6–7 pm if the team works efficiently.
Other duties as assigned by Management.
Requirements- Ability to drive a passenger van and many other passenger vehicles; no special license is required.
- Ability to lead by example, command respect of a team and inspire confidence when dealing with customers at all levels and Roadrunner Manager.
- Be the customer‑facing representative of Roadrunner Services when visiting auto auctions or dealerships to pick up or deliver vehicles.
- Wise decision making.
- Ability to use and train others how to use handheld devices to scan vehicles and enter data.
- Ability to lift hoods to conduct fluid checks, change a tire, put gas in a vehicle and enter/exit van repeatedly.
- Thorough knowledge of the Central Ohio area is helpful.
- Ability and willingness to train team members on vehicle walk‑around inspection and fluid checks.
- Demonstrate ability to follow directions and always look for smarter ways to operate.
- Be dependable and consistently carry out the daily routines listed in the job scope.
- Valid driver’s license and good motor vehicle report, successfully pass background check and drug test.
- Comfortable yet clean and neat attire required while presenting a well‑kept professional appearance.
Monday – Friday, Approximately 30–40 hours a week.
Schedule:
Monday thru Friday.
