Diesel Mechanic/Technician I - Experienced
Join Penske Truck Leasing as an experienced diesel mechanic at our Birmingham, AL location. This role involves performing routine and major maintenance on a fleet of modern truck and trailer equipment. You will work independently, mentor junior technicians, and ensure the highest safety and reliability standards.
Location & ShiftAddress: 226 Oxmoor Circle, Birmingham, AL 35209. Shift: 1st, 2nd, and 3rd, operating 7 days a week. Shift premium: $2.00 for 2nd shift and $3.00 for 3rd shift.
Main Responsibilities- Maintain vehicle safety and performance through preventative maintenance and timely repairs
- Repair and troubleshoot major components, including engines, transmissions, differentials, turbochargers, and fuel systems
- Keep work area clean, safe, and organized
- Use Penske’s tools and technology to log, research, and complete repairs, including basic diagnostics
- Continuously develop skills through Penske’s technician training program
- Support additional projects and tasks assigned by supervisor
- At least 6 years of practical truck and tractor‑trailer maintenance experience
- High school diploma or equivalent; vocational or technical certification in vehicle repair preferred
- Specialized training in diagnosing and troubleshooting major components, OEM training courses, ASE certification, and 608/609 certifications preferred
- Proficiency with all trade tools, including welding, diagnostics, hand, and power tools
- Valid driver’s license required; CDL preferred
- Strong problem‑solving, customer service, communication, and teamwork skills
- Willingness to work in non‑climate‑controlled conditions and to travel within the district as needed
- Basic computer skills; compliance with DOT, OSHA, and Penske safety and maintenance policies
- Reliable attendance and adherence to safety requirements for driving Penske and customer vehicles
- Frequent movement, standing, walking, climbing, bending, and sitting for extended periods
- Use hands to grasp, reach, touch, handle, and operate tools or controls regularly
- Work at heights using ladders and elevated platforms safely
- Work safely in all weather conditions
- See and hear clearly to navigate the work environment safely
- Regularly lift or move up to 50 lbs (23 kg) and occasionally up to 100 lbs (
