UAB Medicine’s Heart & Vascular Center (HVC) is a 48‑bed unit – including open bays, private rooms, and 15 procedure labs – designed to streamline pre‑op and recovery care for cardiac, neuro interventional, and interventional radiology patients. Patient care on this unit supports the cath (ACL) lab, electrophysiology (EP) lab, vascular interventional radiology (VIR) lab, and neuro interventional lab procedure areas.
Staff in this unit conduct assessments and procedures such as cardioversions, ablations, extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO), angioplasty, nephrostomy, biliary drains, thrombectomy, and transesophageal echocardiograms (TEE). It’s a dynamic, fast‑paced environment where nurses continuously learn and challenge their critical assessment skills. Team members experience instant gratification from helping achieve positive outcomes. Staff may be on call 5‑8 days per month, including after hours, weekends, and holidays.
Responding within 30 minutes for emergent cases is required; access to a room may be provided. Ideal candidates have previous critical care experience; additional training is provided for candidates lacking experience.
Utilize the nursing process to provide and monitor moderate sedation care and/or counsel individuals in the heart and vascular procedure setting. Apply critical‑thinking approaches to data gathering, assessment, judgment, intervention, and evaluation of human responses. Activities include health teaching, counseling, and providing interventional care that supports life and a peaceful death. Identify patient needs before, during, and after procedures using the American Association of Critical Care Nurses (AACN) Synergy Model.
Delegate, coordinate, and manage all aspects of nursing care for patients, families, and the community in a timely, cost‑effective manner. Deliver patient care in collaboration with patients, families, and the entire healthcare team, including licensed physicians, psychologists, podiatrists, and/or dentists.
Graduate of a School of Nursing program approved and accredited by the Alabama State Board of Nursing; one (1) year of critical care nursing experience required. Bachelor’s degree in Nursing preferred. Work experience does not substitute for educational requirement. Currently licensed or eligible to be licensed as a Registered Nurse (RN) by the Alabama Board of Nursing required. Certified in Basic Life Support (BLS) from the American Heart Association (AHA) is required or must be obtained within 30 days of employment.
Depending on the unit/department, Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification and/or Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) from the AHA may be required.
