Unit Description9 Harbert is a 24 bed medical-surgical unit with a focus on children with nephrology and gastrointestinal disorders, which includes kidney and liver transplant patients. We also care for endocrinology and urology patients, most commonly new onset diabetes and post urologic surgery care. Some of our most common diagnoses are: biliary atresia, liver failure, nephrotic syndrome, end stage renal disease, kidney and/or liver transplant, lupus, GI motility disorders, inflammatory bowel disease, failure to thrive/malnutrition, short gut syndrome, diabetes mellitus, and pancreatitis.
These conditions affect children of all ages, so we care for the neonate up to the adolescent child. Nurses on 9 Harbert have the opportunity to become proficient in many nursing skills, including IV placement, NG/TP tube placement, CVL care, gastrostomy tube care, ostomy care, peritoneal dialysis, and insulin administration. We pride ourselves in delivering expert care to our patients so that they may achieve the best outcomes possible.
