Work Schedule: Full-time, benefited. Monday‑Friday 8am‑5pm. No weekends, holidays or call.
CME allowance: Full‑time benefited APPs receive an annual $2,000.00 CME allowance usable for recertification, fees, CME courses after start date.
This full‑time position will include telemedicine and in‑person clinic visits for patients with cancer at higher risk of heart disease related to their treatments, or with existing heart disease needing ongoing management. The Advanced Practitioner will primarily see patients at the Kirklin Cardiology Clinic, Acton Road Cardiology Clinic, and at times Gardendale Cardiology Clinic. The primary specialty population includes adult comprehensive cardiovascular care for oncology patients (both hematology and solid tumor).
The practitioner will provide long‑term management of potential side effects of therapies (chemotherapy, radiation, hormonal therapy, targeted therapy and immunotherapy) such as high blood pressure, abnormal heart rhythms, heart blockages, blood clots, stroke, and heart failure.

You’ll also participate in research and develop best practices to drive innovation and improvement, both at UAB Medicine and across the APP community.
Position Summary: To provide medical care and treatment within established scope of practice to patients as assigned by and under the direction of a collaborating physician or under supervision of a Board‑Certified Physician. Coordinate care plan, discharge, referrals, education, perform physical exams, interpret records, assist with procedures, and participate in performance improvement.
- Based on thorough physical and psychosocial patient assessments, formulate & implement comprehensive patient care plans focused on immediate decisions for acute care & emergency (prehospital & emergency department) patients, including patient & family education, prescriptions, additional lab & diagnostic testing, and therapies.
- Ensure complete documentation of patient assessments, care plans, and care provided.
- Order & interpret laboratory & diagnostic tests.
- Maintain records & reports as required by regulatory agencies & The Joint Commission.
- Coordinate & undertake performance & quality improvement activities.
- Assist in coordination of research protocols, serving as a patient advocate & liaison between patient & other health care providers.
- Provide assistance in orientation & training of new clinical personnel, conducting workshops, in‑service training & distributing educational materials for patients & staff.
- Serve as the expert clinical resource to clinical staff & patients in the specialty area.
- Provide a safe environment for patients & others.
- Demonstrate a responsible attitude toward continued professional growth.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Minimum Requirements: Master’s degree in Nursing with a Family NP, Adult Primary NP, or Adult Acute Care NP certification, or graduate from an accredited Physician Assistant program. Work experience may NOT substitute for education requirement.
Preferences: 1‑2 years of APP experience in Cardiology and/or Oncology strongly preferred.
- Currently certified as an Advanced Practice Nurse (APN) with Certified Registered Nurse Practitioner (CRNP) Specialty by the Alabama Board of Nursing, or licensed as a Physician Assistant by the Alabama Board of Medical Examiners with certification as a Physician Assistant (PA‑C) by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants.
