Position Description- Assist patients and their families in making full use of available national, state, institutional, community and pharmaceutical resources.
- Provide social evaluation which includes placement of evaluation in the medical record.
- Provide counseling to patients/families and/or groups.
- Participate in staffing, clinics, and rounds to enhance team understanding of patients’ psychosocial situation.
- Facilitate discharge planning; arrange for services such as home health, hospice, durable medical equipment and/or skilled nursing facility placement.
- Respond to the unique needs of the patient population as needed.
- Provide anticipatory, permanency and/or bereavement/loss counseling to patients and families and/or make appropriate community referrals.
- Supervise bachelor’s and master’s level students as necessary.
- Act as a liaison to the community through public speaking.
- Master's degree in Social Work required. Work experience cannot substitute for the education requirement.
- If the job is in The Kirklin Clinic (TKC), previous experience in a healthcare environment is preferred.
- Currently licensed or eligible to be licensed as a Licensed Master Social Worker (LMSW) by the Alabama State Board of Social Work Examiners is required.
- If the job is in The Kirklin Clinic (TKC), the license must be obtained within six months of employment.
- Self‑directed / self‑motivated with excellent communication and outstanding customer service plus interpersonal skills.
- Perform a variety of duties, often changing from one task to another, with efficiency and composure.
- Accept responsibility for one's own work and work independently.
- Recognize rights and responsibilities of patient confidentiality.
- Convey empathy and compassion to those experiencing pain, physical or emotional distress and/or grief.
- Relate to others, creating a sense of teamwork and cooperation.

- Exhibit flexibility and cope effectively in an ever‑changing, fast‑paced healthcare environment.
- Perform effectively when confronted with emergency, critical, unusual, or dangerous situations.
- Demonstrate the quality work ethic of doing the right thing the right way.
- Maintain a customer focus and strive to satisfy the customer's perceived needs.
