Overview
A leading behavioral healthcare organization is seeking an experienced Director of Risk Management to oversee risk, safety, and compliance operations for a facility located in the Greater Birmingham, Alabama area
. This senior leadership role is critical to maintaining the highest standards of regulatory compliance, patient safety, and accreditation readiness, with a strong emphasis on Joint Commission standards
.
The Director of Risk Management will partner closely with executive and clinical leadership to lead investigations, evaluate critical incidents, implement corrective action plans, and foster a proactive culture of safety and continuous improvement across the organization.
Experience with in behavioral health settings
, particularly detox and substance-use treatment environments
, is strongly preferred.

Required Qualifications- Bachelor’s degree in Risk Management, Business, Healthcare Administration, or a related field
- Minimum of 5 years of healthcare risk management experience
, with behavioral health experience strongly preferred - Experience in detox or substance-use treatment programs is a plus
- At least 1 year of supervisory or management experience
- Strong working knowledge of Joint Commission standards
, federal and state regulations, and accreditation requirements - Demonstrated professionalism in interactions with patients, families, and staff
- Excellent attention to detail and ability to remain vigilant in a safety-sensitive environment
- Ability to remain calm and effective during crises, critical incidents, or high-stress situations
- Solid understanding of healthcare compliance and privacy regulations
- Must successfully pass a criminal background check and drug screen
- Master’s degree in Healthcare Administration, Nursing, Public Health, or a related field
- Hands-on experience supporting Joint Commission surveys, audits, or accreditation preparation
- Lead and oversee all risk management functions within a behavioral health and addiction treatment setting
- Partner with facility and organizational leadership to identify, assess, and mitigate safety and risk concerns
- Ensure ongoing compliance with all legal, regulatory, and accreditation requirements, including Joint Commission standards
- Oversee the investigation, documentation, and analysis of sentinel events and critical incidents
- Lead root cause analyses and guide the development and execution of corrective action plans
- Maintain accurate and comprehensive documentation within risk management systems
- Provide training and guidance to staff on risk management policies, incident reporting, and compliance expectations
- Participate in compliance investigations and support follow-up actions as needed
- Analyze trends and risk data to proactively reduce liability and enhance patient safety
- Support performance improvement initiatives through data-driven risk insights
