Job Summary

Fire Paramedics in the Merit System are responsible for responding to fire calls, emergency medical calls, rescue operations, and a variety of non‑emergency calls to protect lives and property. Employees in this job class are often required to perform advanced life support (ALS) procedures, including administering injections, starting IVs, and cardiac monitoring. Fire Paramedics spend additional time performing custodial maintenance of fire equipment, fire apparatus, rescue vehicles, and station quarters.

Work is performed within established policies and procedures and is reviewed through performance evaluations by a Fire Lieutenant, Fire Captain or Fire Chief.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Possess a current Paramedic License and be a National Registered Paramedic (NREMT).
  • Must be at least 18 years of age by the announcement closing date.
  • Possess a High School Diploma or G.E.D. certificate by the announcement closing date.
  • No felony convictions.
  • Must be able to obtain a Firefighter I/II certification within one year of the hire date.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Firefighter I and Firefighter II certification.
  • Passing score on the Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT) if not Firefighter I/II certified.
Typical

Job Duties
  • Administers invasive health care to patients and victims according to accepted medical guidelines and using specialized medical equipment for life‑threatening emergencies.
  • Administers non‑invasive health care to patients and victims following accepted medical guidelines and using specialized equipment for various conditions.
  • Conducts fire safety activities for the general public to reduce fire‑related incidents and enhance public awareness of fire safety precautions.
  • Deploys fire hoses of varying diameters, applies nozzle specifications, and incorporates appliances into fire suppression activities.
  • Participates in community outreach, including attending off‑site facilities and hosting visitors at the station for trainings, tours and other activities.
  • Minimizes property loss by inspecting scenes, preserving investigative areas, protecting property, and managing debris to facilitate later investigation.
  • Locates and removes victims from incident scenes using specialized rescue techniques and equipment to minimize trauma and transport to appropriate care facilities.
  • Maintains the appearance and operation of the fire station.
  • Participates in formal and informal training sessions and drills to develop the skills required by department policies and national guidelines.
  • Carries out incident commander’s fire suppression orders to extinguish fires and ensure life safety of victims.
  • Ensures proper operation and readiness of apparatuses, equipment, and personal gear through scheduled cleaning, inspections, and maintenance.
Physical Demands

Moderate physical exertion required for occasional prolonged periods of lifting, climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling or running. May involve lifting objects weighing over 75 lbs. Physical ability needed to combat and extinguish fires, respond to emergency medical calls, and provide patient care.

Work Environment

Work conducted both indoors at the fire station and in the field at external sites, including residences and emergency medical facilities. Work involves the use of firefighting and lifesaving equipment and may expose individuals to hazardous weather, traffic, infectious diseases and irate citizens.
