Certified Pharmacy Technician – Specialty Pharmacy

The Certified Pharmacy Technician is responsible for executing specialty pharmacy workflow and managing all components of the prescription process under the direction of the Lead Certified Pharmacy Technician and the Pharmacist in Charge. They must adhere to established procedures to ensure accuracy, compliance, and continuity of care. Precision and accountability are essential because of the complex workflow and high‑cost medications handled.

Effective communication within the team supports safe, timely, and affordable medication therapy. The technician identifies priority tasks and proactively manages competing duties to deliver the highest level of patient service.

Responsibilities
  • Follow pharmacy procedures as outlined in the Pharmacy Technician Task List Roles and Responsibilities manual.
  • Obtain financial assistance and file claims retroactively to apply grants to respective prescriptions, resulting in patient financial responsibility.
  • Maintain A/R balances by sending statements, posting payments, and communicating with patients as necessary.
  • Protect patients and staff by adhering to infection control and workplace safety training and procedures.
  • Accurately enter, bill, count, and sell prescriptions in accordance with applicable laws and procedures.
  • Disinfect and clean pharmacy floors, surfaces, equipment, and document dates and active ingredients of products used.
  • Promptly and accurately enter prescriptions in priority fill.
  • Efficiently contact patients in print queue to determine desired priority and communication expectations accordingly.
  • Print and count prescriptions with defined priority in print queue using proper prioritization.
  • Monitor all queues within Pioneer to ensure all prescriptions are actively managed with timeliness.
  • Exhibit excellent customer service in every patient interaction, with attention to verbal and nonverbal communication.
  • Greet all patients entering the pharmacy promptly with intent to help and a positive attitude.
  • Perform tasks at all pharmacy workflow stations in accordance with expectations outlined in pharmacy procedures (priority fill, print queue, fill, point of sale, delivery, shipping).
  • Maintain pharmacy temperature between 69-78°F and retrieve electronic temperature logs every 90 days.
  • Maintain inventory by establishing par levels, cycle counting, ordering medications and supplies, verifying receipt, and removing expired medications.
  • Receive inbound and make outbound calls.
  • Monitor incoming emails and answer, forward, or follow up as required.
  • Complete prior authorizations using Cover My Meds  and document outcomes in pharmacy system.
  • Triage scheduled prescription fills and contact patients to determine preferred dispensing method.
  • Read, understand, and complete related actions prompted by automated pharmacy reports.
  • Communicate prior authorization criteria, medication benefit coverage, and formulary alternatives to physicians and staff.
  • Research, resolve, and document physician or patient inquiries and grievances, providing results to prescriber, patient, and/or management.
  • Actively participate in monthly pharmacy team meetings.
  • Complete action items and accomplish goals set forth by pharmacy leadership.
  • Perform other administrative duties as required.
Supervisory Responsibilities

Identify and discuss areas of opportunity with other technicians according to pharmacy policies and procedures; partnership with lead pharmacy technician is expected if deficiencies in other team members' performance are observed.

Physical Demands

The role requires occasional standing, walking, sitting, reaching, stooping, kneeling, crouching, or crawling. The employee must occasionally lift or move more than 45 pounds.

Qualifications
  • Active Pharmacy Technician license issued by Alabama Board of Pharmacy and PTCB certification within 6 months of hire, with no discipline and attendance for required CPU’s to maintain license/certification.
  • At least 2 years prior experience in a retail or hospital pharmacy.
