Sterling Search Partners is helping a Birmingham Engineering firm with its search for its first Controller. The Controller is responsible for managing all financial, accounting, and reporting functions for the firm. This role ensures the accuracy and integrity of financial statements, compliance with regulatory requirements, and provides leadership for budgeting, forecasting, and strategic financial planning. The Controller works closely with project managers and executives to support business growth and profitability.
Key Responsibilities:- Oversee all accounting operations including accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, and general ledger.
- Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements and reports for management.
- Ensure compliance with GAAP (Generally Accepted Accounting Principles) and any applicable industry-specific standards.
- Manage month-end and year-end close processes.
- Monitor cash flow and provide regular forecasts to support business operations.
- Develop annual budgets and periodic forecasts in collaboration with department heads.
- Analyze financial performance against budget and provide variance reports.
- Support pricing and project cost analysis to improve profitability.
- Establish and enforce internal controls to safeguard company assets.
- Ensure compliance with tax laws, regulatory filings, and corporate policies.
- Liaise with external auditors, tax advisors, and banking partners.
- Supervise accounting staff and oversee day-to-day financial operations.
- Mentor and develop finance team members.
- Promote a culture of accuracy, accountability, and continuous improvement.
- Provide financial insight and decision support to executive leadership.
- Participate in strategic planning and evaluate potential mergers, acquisitions, or capital investments.
- Assist in project financial reviews and client billing processes.
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field; CPA or CMA preferred.
- 4+ years of progressive accounting experience
- Strong understanding of project-based accounting and job costing.
- Proficient in accounting software and Microsoft Excel.
- Excellent analytical, organizational, and communication skills.
