Director of Engineering

Overview

HPM is seeking a Director of Engineering to provide technical leadership, strategic oversight, and integration across complex capital programs. This senior leadership role is responsible for shaping engineering strategy, ensuring technical excellence, and partnering closely with owners, designers, and internal program teams to deliver predictable outcomes across HPM’s portfolio.

This Director of Engineering will play a critical role in guiding engineering decision-making from early planning through design and execution. The position emphasizes leadership, coordination, and judgment—bringing clarity to complex technical environments while aligning engineering efforts with owner priorities, program goals, and HPM’s advisory-led approach.

This role is not a hands-on design position. Success will be measured by the ability to lead engineering strategy, evaluate and manage technical risk, and serve as a trusted advisor to owners and project teams throughout the lifecycle of major capital programs.

• Serve as HPM’s senior engineering leader and technical advisor across assigned capital programs
• Provide oversight and guidance on engineering scope, design quality, constructibility, and technical risk
• Partner closely with owners, design consultants, and program leadership to align engineering decisions with program objectives
• Review and evaluate engineering deliverables to ensure alignment with standards, budgets, schedules, and owner expectations
• Support early planning, feasibility, and pre-design efforts to inform project strategy and decision-making
• Collaborate with program management, construction, and business development teams during pursuits and project execution
• Help establish best practices, standards, and processes for engineering oversight across the firm
• Identify and proactively address technical challenges, conflicts, or gaps across disciplines
• Represent HPM with credibility and confidence in owner, consultant, and industry-facing settings

• Bachelor’s degree in Engineering required;
  Professional Engineer (PE) license strongly preferred
• 12+ years of experience in engineering, design management, or technical leadership within capital programs, construction, or professional services
• Background in civil, structural, or related engineering disciplines supporting large-scale projects
• Experience overseeing or coordinating multi-discipline design teams and external consultants
• Strong understanding of capital program delivery, engineering risk management, and owner decision-making
• Demonstrated ability to lead through influence rather than direct authority
• Strategic thinker with sound technical judgment and attention to detail
• Excellent communication skills with the ability to translate technical concepts for non-technical stakeholders
