Contract- 3 YearsPosition Summary:
This role supports the Grid Operations and Planning Research area within Southern Company’s Research & Development department, specifically under the SGVAC, an innovation hub for emerging situational awareness technologies for Transmission and Distribution systems. The position emphasizes advanced power system analysis, modeling and simulation, data analytics, and visualization to evaluate and implement next-generation grid technologies.
This individual will support and eventually lead efforts to test, evaluate, and deploy new operational tools and technologies, including DERMS platforms, DMS integration, synchrophasor applications, and cyber-secure grid solutions using tools like Real Time Digital Simulator (RTDS).
Key Responsibilities:Support and lead research initiatives focused on grid operations technologies.
Develop and execute research plans to evaluate emerging systems and tools.
Conduct power system modeling, real-time simulation, and hardware-in-the-loop testing.
Apply data science and big data analytics to improve system monitoring, control, and visualization.
Integrate DERMS, DMS, and next-gen control center functionalities into research projects.
Prepare clear and detailed documentation, reports, and technical presentations.
Collaborate across teams, departments, and external stakeholders.
Manage multiple tasks and projects concurrently with minimal supervision.
Master of Science in Electrical Engineering (Power Systems specialization preferred)
Experience or academic training in computer programming (Python, C#, SQL)
Exposure to data science, modeling, and simulation in a power system context
Solid understanding of power system operations, transmission and distribution systems, and control center technologies
Familiarity with RTDS, SCADA systems, and cybersecurity considerations in energy systems
Proficiency in data structures, databases, and networking fundamentals
Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills
Excellent written and verbal communication skills
Ability to thrive in a collaborative team environment
Demonstrated ability to deliver results across cross-functional R&D projects
