Join AMERICAN as our Environmental Compliance Director and lead the environmental compliance program for our Birmingham facilities, ensuring we meet all city, county, state, and federal environmental regulations. You'll manage permitting and compliance, and drive continuous improvement in environmental practices while collaborating on impactful projects across the organization.

What You'll Do
  • Oversee AMERICAN's Birmingham facility environmental compliance system, working closely with manufacturing supervision to ensure all regulations are met.
  • Oversee environmental projects, waste management procedures, and cost-effective treatment processes for air, water, and waste streams.
  • Develop subordinates to build cohesive teams.
  • Work with legislators, regulatory agencies, and industry groups to influence environmental policy and stay ahead of changing laws.
  • Collaborate with neighborhood associations and respond to environmental concerns related to AMERICAN's operations.
  • Provide environmental audits for AMERICAN and its subsidiaries.
  • Maintain environmental records and data, stay current with changing regulations, and inform management of implications.
  • Communicate with departmental and in-plant personnel to gain feedback, and collect data for permitting and compliance reporting.
  • Provide regular updates to management on operational activities and compliance status.
What We're Looking For
  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited four-year college or university.
  • At least four years prior experience working in environmental compliance.
  • Prior experience supervising employees or leading cross-functional project teams.
  • Working knowledge of technical information, including manufacturing processes, chemical treatment, and waste disposal.
  • Experience with environmental regulations, including implementation and continuous compliance.
  • Excellent management, leadership, and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong communication, analytical, and organizational skills.
  • Proficient with Word, Excel, Outlook, and technical measuring instruments.
  • Valid state‑issued driver's license.
  • Willingness and ability to maintain current Department of Transportation (Use the "Apply for this Job" box below). Mat/49 CFR Part 172 certification (must be obtained within one year if not already certified).
  • Willingness and ability to maintain current Smoke School Certification (must be obtained within six months if not already certified).
  • Ability to travel as required and work extra hours on weekdays, weekends, or holidays as needed.
  • Physically able to perform essential job functions, with or without reasonable accommodations.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Master's in Environmental Management.
  • Eight or more years of prior work experience in environmental compliance.
  • Three or more years of prior experience supervising employees or leading cross‑functional project teams.
  • Thorough knowledge of AMERICAN manufacturing processes and products or similar processes and products.
