Overview
The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) seeks an ASSISTANT DIRECTOR-BIRMINGHAM PROMISE to play an integral part in the recruitment and retention of various Birmingham and Alabama students who have traditionally been underserved in the college access and success arenas. To take responsibility for the daily management and direction of the Birmingham Promise Scholars Program assist with developing new avenues for recruiting and retaining underserved populations within the Birmingham community, particularly via area non‑profit organizations that serve underserved middle and high school students.
Responsibilities- Plays an integral part in the recruitment and retention of Birmingham and Alabama students who have traditionally been underserved in the college access and success arenas.
- Takes responsibility for the daily management and direction of the Birmingham Promise Scholars program at UAB, which includes but not be limited to the following:
Summer Bridge/Welcome Weekend for Birmingham Promise students, Birmingham Promise Mentor supervision, coordination of information and reporting with Financial Aid and Birmingham Promise Inc., mid‑Semester student meetings with Birmingham Promise students, program outreach, data procurement, communications and promotions of the program, activity and event development/implementation, individual student meetings as needed. - Assists with the development of new avenues for the recruitment and retention of underserved populations within the Birmingham community, and particularly via area non‑profit organizations that serve underserved middle and high school students.
- Assists with implementing communication and programming that introduces defined middle and high school populations to UAB as they are identified.
- Assists with developing and communicating with a network of referrals and influencers in the realm of underserved and first‑generation middle and high school students.
- Assists with developing connections with campus entities, particularly faculty, who conduct summer outreach programs to underserved or first‑generation middle and high school students.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Annual Salary: $43,890 - $45,000
Bachelor's degree in a related field and two (2) years of related experience. Work experience may NOT substitute for education requirement.
The ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, with students, faculty, staff, and community partners and to work cooperatively with diverse areas of the campus and Birmingham community is critical.
- Exceptional organizational, leadership, and communication skills are required.
- Outstanding critical thinking skills, a proven track‑record of commitment to teamwork, and an ability to work independently are considered essential.
