Professional Math Tutor

Join Inside Higher Ed as a Professional Math Tutor.

Position Summary:

The Student Support Services Professional Tutor (SSST) provides tutorial support for students in lab, one‑on‑one, or open classroom settings. The tutor delivers content support but not instruction, aligning with the college's mission and core values. The SSST supports program participants, tracks progress each semester, and assists in retention and graduation.

Hours:

Local Salary Schedule $20.15 per hour up to 19 hours per week.

This is a grant‑funded position. Continued employment depends on grant funding. Non‑probationary status is not attainable in this position; its duration and funding are finite.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Provides academic assistance to assigned students, individually or in groups.
  • Assists students in understanding specific subject areas and improves academic capabilities.
  • Participates in periodic training or orientation sessions as required.
  • Provides evaluations and reports as requested.
  • Documents student progress and develops study skills.
  • Fosters positive attitudes toward learning and motivates students to achieve success.
  • Establishes and maintains rapport with assigned students and serves as a role model.
  • Promotes an inclusive learning environment.
  • Works to ensure successful performance, retention, and graduation of participants.
  • Recruits participants with potential for college success.
  • Monitors academic progress and coordinates with faculty/staff as necessary.
  • Upholds professional ethical standards, maintaining confidentiality.
  • Maintains flexible work schedule to accommodate participants.
  • Maintains a clean, organized, and welcoming office environment.
  • Attends professional development, TRIO workshops, seminars, and conferences.
  • Provides data to the Director per program requirements.
  • Performs additional duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in mathematics (Master’s degree preferred).
  • Three years of successful teaching experience in mathematics or related field.
  • Experience working with disadvantaged students and administering diagnostic tests (preferred).
  • Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal skills; computer proficiency.

  • Ability to work flexible schedule including nights as needed.
  • Willingness to take initiative and commit to continuous improvement.
  • Capable of developing, interpreting, and applying policies and procedures; researching, analyzing, and preparing reports.
  • Applies customer‑service initiatives to campus community.
