Overview
DENTAL ASSISTANT III – The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) is seeking a DENTAL ASSISTANT III for a chairside dental assistant role in a busy residency program. Assistants work with various residents to provide a broad range of dental care to medically complex patients. The position supports a variety of procedures including general dentistry, surgical procedures, and anesthesia (nitrous, oral, and general).
Chairside responsibilities include four handed dentistry, taking blood pressure, verbalizing instructions to patients, and obtaining patient consents. In addition to chairside duties, assistants maintain rooms and equipment, take and process radiographs, and dispense supplies. During sedation procedures, assistants attach and detach monitors, recognize abnormal blood pressure and oxygen saturation readings, and report problems to residents/faculty. The environment includes general dentistry, inpatient hospital care, and dentistry in an OR setting.
Work schedule:
7:30-4:30 Monday-Friday.
- Providing support in various dental procedures, assisting with surgical procedures, sedation, and anesthesia.
- Maintains surgery rooms and equipment, takes and processes radiographs of patients and dispenses supplies.
- Assists residents and faculty with anesthesia of all types to include conscious sedation, nitrous oxide and general anesthesia.
- Obtains patient consent.
- Attaches and detaches monitors during sedation procedures, monitors vital signs, recognizes abnormal readings, and reports problems to resident/faculty surgeon.
- Charts patient vital signs throughout procedures and verbally communicates preoperative and post-operative instructions to patients.
- Performs a variety of clerical and administrative duties in support of the department and responds to the needs of patients of all ages.
- Provides assistance with advanced general dentistry cases and with surgical procedures requiring sedation and anesthesia.
Graduate from an accredited Dental Assistant Program and two (2) years of related experience required. Work experience may substitute for education requirement.
