The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) is seeking a Business Officer II to serve as business manager for the Heersink School of Medicine Department of Cell, Developmental and Integrative Biology. The successful applicant will support the department Administrator with administrative detail in financial and budget management, grants administration, policy interpretation and enforcement. Responsibilities include conducting special projects, compiling reports on budgets, personnel, and research activities, interacting with University administrative units, ensuring integrity of department and school administration, and handling compliance‑related issues.
GeneralResponsibilities
- Serve as business manager, relieving department head or dean of administrative detail with responsibility for financial, budget, personnel policy, space and facilities planning, grants administration, policy interpretation and enforcement.
- Conduct special projects, analyze data, and compile reports regarding budgets, personnel, and space utilization.
- Interact with University administrative units and assure integrity of administrative and financial operations.
- Manage staff and handle strategic planning.
- Serve as financial/budget/grants management officer for the unit.
- Interact with administrators and assist with interdepartmental collaborations.
- Handle compliance‑related issues.
- Ensure proper accounting of departmental accounts.
- Provide guidance on major equipment purchases and bid laws.
- Provide timely reports to departmental faculty and Department Administrator monthly.
- Analyze accountancy activity and proactively resolve budget vs. actual issues.
- Prepare payments, review and approve purchase orders, P‑card transactions, and payment requests for accuracy and appropriateness.
- Post‑Award Grants Management:
Pay and post invoices, prepare reports; re‑budget and process funding source changes. - Ensure proper accounting of grant accounts, amendments, modifications, and extensions.
- Reconcile grant and non‑grant accounts and provide reporting and analysis.
Skills & Qualifications
- Self‑starter, proactive, diligent with follow‑through.
- Proficient in Excel.
- Prefer Oracle and BA4 experience.
- Highly organized.
- Ability to work independently.
- Strong communication and customer service skills.
- Collaborative; able to work with all levels of management.
- Maintain confidentiality.
$63,875‑$80,000
Education- Bachelor's degree in Business or a related field and five (5) years of related experience required.
- Work experience may NOT substitute for education requirement.
