The Tax Manager is responsible for overseeing the preparation and review of complex tax returns, managing client relationships, and providing strategic tax planning services. This role serves as a key leadership position within the tax practice, ensuring technical accuracy, regulatory compliance, and high-quality client service while mentoring and developing tax staff.
Key Responsibilities:
Technical & Compliance
- Review federal, state, and local tax returns for individuals, partnerships, corporations, and trusts.
- Conduct in-depth tax research and provide guidance on complex tax matters.
- Ensure compliance with current tax laws and firm quality standards.
- Identify tax‑saving opportunities and recommend strategic planning solutions.
- Serve as the primary point of contact for assigned clients.
- Provide proactive tax planning and consulting throughout the year.
- Translate complex tax concepts into clear, actionable guidance for clients.
- Support clients during audits and respond to taxing authority inquiries when necessary.
- Supervise, mentor, and review the work of senior associates and staff.
- Delegate engagements effectively while maintaining accountability for deadlines and quality.
- Provide coaching, performance feedback, and professional development support.
- Assist with recruiting and onboarding new team members.
- Manage multiple engagements simultaneously and ensure projects are delivered on time and within scope.
- Monitor workflow, budgets, and realization.
- Collaborate with firm leadership on process improvements and best practices.
- Contribute to a positive team culture focused on accountability and client service.
- Participate in networking and relationship‑building activities.
- Identify cross‑selling opportunities within existing client relationships.
- Support proposal development and prospect meetings as needed.
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or related field (Master’s preferred).
- Active CPA license required.
- 5–8+ years of public accounting tax experience.
- Strong knowledge of federal and state tax regulations.
- Proven ability to manage client relationships and lead engagements.
- Excellent analytical, organizational, and communication skills.
- Experience with leading tax software platforms (e.g., CCH, GoSystem, Ultra Tax) preferred.
- Demonstrated leadership capabilities with a collaborative mindset.
- High attention to detail with strong problem‑solving ability.
- Ability to thrive in a deadline‑driven environment.
- Growth‑oriented with interest in advancing within the firm.
