Are you committed to supporting young people with Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs? Axcis Education, on behalf of a specialist SEMH school in the CH43 area, is seeking a resilient, compassionate and proactive Teaching Assistant to join their dedicated team. This specialist provision supports pupils who experience significant barriers to learning due to social, emotional and mental health difficulties.
Many students may present with trauma‑related behaviours, anxiety, attachment needs, ADHD, or challenging behaviour, and require consistent, nurturing and structured support to succeed both academically and personally.
- Provide 1:1 and small group support for pupils with SEMH needs.
- Build strong, trusting relationships to support emotional regulation and positive behaviour.
- Implement behaviour support plans and therapeutic strategies under the guidance of senior staff.
- Promote a safe, structured and nurturing learning environment.
- Support pupils in developing coping strategies, resilience and social skills.
- De‑escalate challenging situations calmly and effectively using agreed approaches.
- Work closely with teachers, the SENCO and external professionals to ensure consistent support.
- Accurately record incidents, progress and intervention outcomes in line with school policies.
- Previous experience working with children or young people with SEMH, behavioural needs or trauma‑informed approaches.
- A calm, patient and resilient nature.
- Strong behaviour management skills and confidence working in challenging environments.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to remain professional and consistent in emotionally demanding situations.
- Understanding of safeguarding procedures and child protection policies.
- Relevant qualifications in Teaching Assistance, Education, Childcare, Mental Health, Social Work, Youth Work or Care (desirable but not essential with relevant experience).
- Enhanced DBS on the Update Service (or willingness to obtain one).
- Competitive hourly rate starting from £13.69 per hour.
