Position: Senior Industrial Hygienist/Trainee 1/2 - Binghamton (NY HELPS)
Location: City of Binghamton

Duties

Inspect work sites to determine compliance with state and federal standards/guidelines and to identify health violations and hazards, particularly those associated with toxic or explosive chemicals and substances such as dusts, fibers (including asbestos), fumes, mists, vapors, gases, metals, and pathogenic organisms. Identify hazards such as noise and vibrations, light, and other physical energies including electromagnetic emissions.

Based on field testing and/or laboratory analyses from on‑site inspections, confer with management and employee representatives and/or take appropriate enforcement or consultation actions.

Conduct training for staff or public and private sector employers and employees. Use a computer in the performance of these duties.

Responsibilities
  • Travel to work sites as required.
  • Maintain a valid driver’s license and be able to operate a motor vehicle in New York State.
  • Work occasional evenings and/or out‑station assignments as needed.
Minimum Qualifications
  • For NY HELPS Non‑Competitive appointments:
    • Industrial Hygiene Trainee 1:
      Bachelor’s or higher degree in a listed science or engineering field plus 8 semester credit hours in chemistry.
    • Industrial Hygiene Trainee 2:
      Bachelor’s or higher degree in a listed science or engineering field plus 8 semester credit hours in chemistry and one year of industrial hygiene experience.
    • Senior Industrial Hygienist:
      Bachelor’s or higher degree in a listed science or engineering field plus 8 semester credit hours in chemistry and two years of industrial hygiene experience.
  • Degree awarded by an institution accredited by a U.S. Department of Education–recognized accrediting agency; if outside the U.S., provide independent verification of equivalency.
  • Qualified for this position under the 55 b/c exam by presenting a 55 b/c letter and meeting the open‑competitive qualifications from the most recent examination announcement.
  • Current Department of Labor employees with at least one year of qualifying service may be eligible for reassignment or transfer to this title.

  • Ability to initiate and maintain relationships across a diverse set of stakeholders.

Telecommuting is available and can be discussed during the interview. Eligibility may allow up to 2 days per regular work‑week, not to exceed 4 days in any two‑week pay period.

Employees hired under NY HELPS will have their non‑competitive status converted to competitive status in the future without requiring examination. They are entitled to the same rights and privileges as competitive class employees of New York State.

This position may require a fingerprint background check prior to appointment. Candidates with no prior state service will begin at the starting rate of the salary range listed. Employers may verify qualifications through the Department of Labor’s Business Services Center.
