The Office of Entrepreneurship and Innovation Partnerships (EIP) at Binghamton University manages economic development, intellectual property rights, and technology transfer activities, including technology licensing, business incubation programs, entrepreneurship training and support, and innovation initiatives.
The Technology Transfer Manager is a key member of the EIP technology transfer unit. The role advances Binghamton's physical science and information technology assets from intake to assessment through to securing intellectual property rights protection, marketing, licensing, and translation. The role supports the launch and growth of university spinout companies through campus and partner technology commercialization and business incubation resources.
Responsibilities- Work with campus inventors to encourage and facilitate submission of New Technology Disclosures
- Assess inventions and creative works relative to patent or copyright potential and licensing to company development partners; design and support pathways for commercialization, including via campus spinout companies
- Advise and educate Binghamton creators regarding intellectual property law, funding agency regulations, and SUNY policies as they apply to ownership, revenue sharing, and conflicts of interest
- Prepare marketing materials and undertake campaigns to present physical science inventions, software, and creative works to potential company commercialization partners
- Coordinate inventors in working with RF SUNY and outside counsel on patent filings and copyright registrations
- Guide faculty, staff, and students to resources for translating and commercializing inventions and launching spinouts, including through grant programs and university/external resources
- Participate in deploying and delivering EIP programs that educate and support inventors in technology translation and commercialization
- Build and foster relationships with corporate business development teams
- Draft and negotiate agreements (e.g., options and licenses, nondisclosure, material transfer, intellectual property, inter-institutional)
- Manage caseload through docketing databases (Minuet by Inteum) and other EIP platforms
- Assist Division of Research with compliance, including reporting inventions to sponsors
- Contribute to EIP funding proposals and grant implementation
- Bachelor's degree in physical science, natural science, or engineering
- At least two (2) years of professional work experience in technology transfer or related roles
- Proficiency with MS Office Suite and Google Workspace
- Strong communication and organizational skills
- Ability to work independently and in a team
- Inquisitive and active learner with research and analytical ability
- Outreach and networking skills
- Ability to manage multiple tasks in a deadline-driven environment
- Master’s degree in physical sciences or engineering, an MBA, or a JD
- Five (5) years of related experience in technology transfer at a university with state or federal agency involvement, or in industry/private sector with startups, incubators, or investment firms
- Project management experience
- Contracting experience
- Experience working with a startup
