Job Description

The Department of Anthropology offers undergraduate and graduate students an unparalleled education through its comprehensive curriculum that emphasizes the study of past and present human groups, the cultures and societies people create, and the processes that animate cultural production and social life. Programs span four subfields: archaeology, biological anthropology, linguistic anthropology and sociocultural anthropology. The department is dedicated to excellence, diversity, and equity.

The Binghamton University Department of Anthropology invites applications for an assistant tenure‑track faculty member with expertise in the politics and/or economics of media, to begin in August 2026. Geographical area is open, but preference will be given to candidates with ethnographic research experience in the Global South or North America. The successful applicant will have an ongoing ethnographic research program focused on media related to power, inequality, and/or cross‑cultural communication, and a record of commitment to teaching excellence.

They will teach an ethnographic or digital methods course and may offer additional courses reflecting their interests at both the undergraduate and graduate level. The teaching load is 2/2. In addition to maintaining a robust program of research and teaching, the successful applicant will advise and mentor undergraduate and graduate students and contribute service to the department, university and profession.

Candidates should hold a Ph.D. in Anthropology or an equivalent degree by the time of appointment, have a developed research agenda, experience in student mentoring, and peer‑reviewed publications.

  • Teach two classes each semester (four per academic year)
  • Contribute to department and university service by serving on committees as needed
  • Advise undergraduate and graduate students
Requirements

Required Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. in Anthropology or a related field by August 17, 2026
  • Ethnographic research experience on the politics and/or economics of media

Preferred Qualifications:

  • An active research program based in either the Global South or North America
  • Record of teaching courses on digital and/or ethnographic methods
  • Advising experience
  • Peer‑reviewed publications
