Job DescriptionThe Philosophy Department at Binghamton University, State University of New York, is conducting an open rank search for a professor with a research specialization in Social and Political Philosophy, Ethics, and/or Philosophy of Law. We are taking a broad look at promising research programs in all of these areas. Hiring will occur at the Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor level, depending on the candidate’s experience and qualifications.
We will give serious consideration to eligible applicants at any stage of career, but a demonstrated trajectory of high scholarly achievement is required.
- Play an active role in the department’s graduate program in Social, Political, Ethical, and Legal Philosophy (SPEL), supporting a diverse scholarly community engaged with value theory from multiple historical traditions and a variety of contemporary approaches.
- Teach graduate and undergraduate courses and supervise teaching assistants.
- Serve on thesis and dissertation committees, direct graduate‑level work, and actively participate in department colloquia and other programming.
- Maintain a 2/2 teaching load, regularly teaching undergraduate classes that support Binghamton University’s large Philosophy, Politics, and Law major.
Required Qualifications
- Ph.D. in Philosophy, or closely related field, by August 17, 2026.
- Specialization in Social and Political Philosophy, Ethics, or Philosophy of Law.
- Ability to teach graduate‑level Philosophy classes in area of specialization.
- Experience teaching undergraduate classes, either as a teaching assistant or as instructor.
